I am writing this from the balcony of my room at Chimpanzee Lodge, a stone’s throw away from Nyungwe National Park. The view from this spot is breathtaking.
I have just concluded the first leg of my tour of Nyaruguru. When I left this Southern Province district, I traveled to Nyamagabe and spent some time in the evergreen Kitabi area. On my way to Kitabi, I had a stopover on the bank of Mwogo River and strolled along the Richard Kandt Trail. I will need several posts to share my discoveries around these two remarkable attractions.
From Kitabi, I crossed Nyungwe forest and took a minute to admire the beauty of Gisakura area in Bushekeri Sector, Nyamasheke District. Kitabi and Bushekeri are among the greenest places in Rwanda. Since green is synonymous with beauty, I believe it’s safe to say these two sectors are among the most beautiful ones in Rwanda. That says a lot considering how attractive the rest of the country is.
It takes about an hour to cross Nyungwe forest while driving to Nyamasheke via Nyamagabe. Drivers are advised to exercise caution along this meandering road as they maneuver through one S-shaped stretch after another.
Beware, baboons and their cousins tend to cross the road at their own pace. No one has ever instructed them to look right, left and right again before crossing. Expect them to appear out of nowhere. Reckless driving poses a serious risk to travelers and animals alike.
Wild animals are free to traverse the road as they wish. When you bump into a group of primates holding a meeting in the middle of the highway, pull over and switch your hazard lights on to warn the driver behind you, if any. Don’t honk. Honking makes wild animals wilder. Besides, you don’t have any rights to disturb the bona fide inhabitants of the park, especially when they are in an important meeting.
Apart from sharp corners, this road has many steep gradients and slopes. The views from elevated spots are spectacular. Seeing how thick vegetation winds through the landscape, covering the surface and falling over deep valleys will take your breath away.
My plan was to proceed to Kagano Sector and spend the night near Nyamasheke District’s headquarters but the sight of Chimpanzee Lodge tempted me to check it out. That’s how I ended up in this room. The magnetic charm of this facility is irresistible.
