En route to Nyabihu

I have not yet covered Nyabihu District extensively. After a decade of driving through this Western Province district without deviating from the highway, it’s about time I find out what the administrative area has to offer.

My most memorable stopover in Nyabihu was the day rain interrupted my tea plucking experiment in Bigogwe Sector. Although my desire to trace the genesis of this iconic beverage was eventually fulfilled, I still have unfinished business in Nyabihu.

Months after the aborted tea experience, I visited a cooperative of honey producers in Jenda Sector and learned one or two things about Bee Keeping. Learning in a hands-on way made the highly technical topic easy to digest.

This summer, I am planning an exhilarating adventure ride around the district. I can’t wait to indulge in community-based tourism and learn more about the cultural practices of the people of Nyabihu. Also in the itinerary is a visit to Gishwati-Mukura National Park and Biosphere Reserve.

The much anticipated tour of Nyabihu will be followed by a series of short stories published right here. At the end of the day, the content will be repackaged to create a book showcasing the beauty of the district and inspiring stories featuring members of the local communities. Copies of this book will be donated to different community libraries across the country, courtesy of our very own local businesses.

I am writing this piece in a clean and comfortable Rubavu-bound public transportation minibus. I will be dropped at the entrance of the Rwanda Coding Academy located in Mukamira Sector, Nyabihu District. I am visiting the academy to pick the brains of the "born to code" geeks but that’s a story for another day.
