We have been hit by an influenza-like attack of unprecedented proportions. The viral infection determined to knock down our lungs and our economies. I am not an expert but I know it’s time to go to war.
You and I have been enlisted in the army. We are going to war. Unlike the conventional wars you have seen in movies, this one is waged differently.
If you are in Rwanda, join me in a civic duty to stay at home for an initial period of two weeks. I am not inviting you to my home. Stay in yours. The isolation period could be longer depending on what unfolds during the next fourteen days or so. However, the call for staying at home knows no boundaries at this point. Wherever you are on planet earth, stay at home as much as you can until the coronavirus is contained.
I understand staying at home is not easy but the soldier in you will prevail. You are probably not in a position to work from home but the soldier in you will find a way to stay productive within the confinement of your house. The global economy is feeling the pinch but the soldier in each one of us shall weather the storm.
Our comrades in essential services are on the frontline. The rest of us are deployed on a different battlefield, namely home.
Businesses are closed, those providing essential products and services being the only exceptions. We can still buy food and fulfill the rest of our basic needs. I don’t know how long it will take to win this war but from the look of things, you don’t need to stockpile tons of toilet paper rolls. Calm down.
As we procure supplies, we need to be careful. A delivery person who enters every house defeats the purpose. Heightened vigilance is key.
Electronic payments and online banking services are running smoothly. Fortunately, the digitalization of the economy and access to data have created an enabling environment for a significant portion of the global population to work from home. If you are reading this, chances are, you are among the privileged ones. Stay home. Stay safe.
This is a war. In wartime situations, drastic, even ruthless measures are taken. Every soldier must adhere to a strict code of conduct. We can’t afford to let this pandemic get out of control.
